Why is it the material of choice for our team and other carpenters who make river tables and similar furniture? There’s more than just one reason, so let us explain!
Before we explain why we use epoxy resin for our river tables, let’s explain what epoxy is.
What is epoxy?
Epoxy is a polymer that can be used as an adhesive, filler, or protective coating. When we use epoxy for our custom furniture, it serves as all three. The epoxy binds the pieces of wood together, fills in the gaps, and leaves a protective finish on the surface. The epoxy itself has two main components: a liquid resin and a hardener. The resin determines what it looks like when it dries, and the hardener cures the epoxy mixture into a hard, durable plastic.
Why do we use it?
There are several reasons why we choose epoxy resin over other materials. Here are the top three:
- It’s strong and resilient. Although our custom pieces are beautiful, they are also functional. When we make a table or cutting board, we expect the customer to use it! Using epoxy resin ensures that anyone who buys one of our pieces can use it without worrying about damaging it. It’s a strong and chemical-resistant material that can withstand the wear and tear of household use.
- It’s non-toxic. When we make furniture or kitchen items like cutting boards, we have to consider the toxicity of the materials we use. Epoxy is non-toxic and free of VOCs (volatile organic compounds), so it’s safe to use for food prep and similar purposes.
- It’s easy to customize. Every piece we make is unique, whether it’s a table or a charcuterie board. We can easily mix epoxy to have various colors and finishes, so no two of our pieces are quite the same. Using this material lets us make custom-ordered pieces and allows our craftsmen to exercise their creativity.
